Thanks for the updates Gabe. I already found that much out. I'll be in contact with someone tomorrow from each company to start the ground work. Mostly I'm going to figure out if it will be possible to get Akira, considering the state that Geneon is in. Even though they are not in the distribution racket anymore, they still might actively handle rights issues.
Finding the company is easy, it's finding the right person within the company, their number and extension, and starting the leg work with them that is actually the hard part of all of this. Well not hard, just tedious, since it requires a lot of holding, asking questions, getting bounced around, until you finally get the person you want to talk to.
That's cool Mike. I'll wait for the contact, since I haven't gotten it yet. It is actually quite exciting that welcome week budget could pay for this.
I think the biggest things we need to work on right now for the event will be how we will be handling concessions. Is it possible with the room we have? Can we give it away for free? Who do we need to go through? What will be provide? Who will be working this?
This will be a wonderful advertisement opportunity. A great chance to actually DO something as a club rather then just watching what we want and hanging out. We are getting anime out there in the eyes of the campus. Which I think should be our actual goal as a club, to create and nurture new fans.
I'll post my updates tomorrow when I am finished with making the calls before I head off to Ohio. Good luck on the planning.
Oh, and just because I feel like it. I vote for Here is Greenwood, Please Save my Earth, Giant Robo, Gunbuster, and 801 TTS Airbats.

Alright. Spoke with Geneon's customer service. Geneon still handles rights issues with their titles. Akira and anything Geneon is free to use. There is a form we have to fill out and then fax to them. A representative will contact us directly about the permissions. As for flyers, posters, and other promotional material, I hope to be able to speak with them and obtain them. form can be found here: www.ngsilver.com/umdanime/Geneon permission form.doc (copy and paste in your address bar) ~~~~~~~~~ Buena Vista now has another company, Swank or Flank Motion Pictures, that handles rights issues. I contacted them and spoke with Mary Wonak. They have contacts already with the college, she said Amy with the SAC. For a free showing it will cost $475 for the title and $21 for round trip shipping of the screener copy. Once we have purchased the showing rights for that title we will be given a login and a website to access free promotional materials, which at this time are only flyers and other things. For posters we would have to contact another company, Ricks Movie Graphics and probably have to purchase them. I've spoken with them, so my name is part of the initial proceedings. All we will need to do is setup the address and such for the showing, the time, and of course which account the fee will be charged to. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ So, everything is very possible and fairly easy to obtain. As long as we know the dates and get the account setup for Howls we can start advertising. Geneon will take aprox 1 week after faxing in the form. Gabe, either you or Mike should be the one to sign the form and send it in for Akira. I'm not officially an officer for the club so it would be best if I don't use my signature. I would like to contact them for promotional materials, however if they contact you either send them to me or ask them yourselves about it.

Nice going, Nate! Glad to see that progress is being made!
So, if we include the price of licensing, the screener copy, and about $100 for food, we're looking at a $600 bill so far, which is not counting what we might have to pay for room usage, advertisement, and the like.

normally room usage is free for student orgs anyway, might i suggest looking into a few other titles that might be less well insanely priced.

We'll consider it, but I still think HMC is a good choice on account of the fact that it's got mainstream appeal (name-dropping can do wonders to draw the attention of the masses...)
(And on a completely unrelated note, it just occurred to me that in Slayers, Lina shares a VA with Jessie in the original Japanese version, while in the dub, Gourry shares a voice with James. Coincidence, or conspiracy? You be the judge...)

Any title owned by Disney is going to be expensive. It seems costs have gone up about 100 bucks since I last looked into these things in 03. It's a fairly standard price. Part of the reason anime companies are as easy going about these things is actually due to their need to be welcoming of fans. Disney, like any major movie company, doesn't need something like that to maintain fans. Though I suspect we may start seeing anime companies begin to actually charge for showings as costs increase and more and more VAs start joining unions. In the end it is the nature of the beast.
Considering, from my understanding, the club's actual budget, and the fact that much of this will probably be paid for from welcome week funds, this isn't that big of a deal. So far, what have we, as a club, done with our budget? As of right now, we have already compromised by obtaining a title that is free, originally I believe we wanted to grab something owned by Tri-star (such as cowboy bebop) which would be just as expensive to obtain.
The price we are getting for this is for the permission and license to publicly show their title. On top of that, we are getting promotional materials for FREE. I can assure you that the price for the movie itself is cheap in comparison to the price we would have to pay in order to reproduce the artwork given to us for free in this deal.

so much to respond to.
I have to figure out which room we have. Karen Stone told me to work with Cory A. to do get a room for welcome week, but he only showed up briefly for the meeting and Michel Saad was the one holding it. He is going to reserve the room, which will either be Kochoff section C or CASL 1030. Food would be no problem for Kochoff, but I don't know about CASL 1030. If we do food, we should go through Aramark. We'd probably be doing snacks, and their snack foods are fine and reasonably priced. The cost can be tacked onto the club account, which can be reimbursed by the SOAC.
The people at Friday's gathering said that popcorn, soda, and lemonade would be the likely choices. I'll pick up the catering menu on Monday.
I'm not certain what percentage they will pay of the cost, but I don't think it'll be over 50 percent. We can figure some way to work out the cost. I have a few things I think we could try. 1) see if we could use the club account. I don't know if there is any money in it currently or not, and we may be able to dip into the negatives for the event. From my understanding the account just needs to be in the positives by the end of the semester. 2) we could get a group of people to pitch in a small amount. $400 split 8 ways is only $50, which would be less if we could get more people. 3) Doesn't Ronin still have unused funds? Gabe would know more than me, but doesn't Rusty have the old club's funds?
If anyone else has ideas for funding, feel free to throw out ideas.

The club was granted some 200$ at start up, Eric and i used some to do fliers back when he was still in charge (2004). Ronin does have $ but i would need to work with rusty and might need an all clear from older ronin people, now also considering rusty and mel are two of the oldest (seniority not age) i know of, and most of my other friends are old ronin members (hell i think brandon and steve would count as well.)....................
