We've been here for a while, and I have yet to see us host any events that the entire school could enjoy. While I think I can tell how we would be insecure in doing something (what after the experience of the Super Smash Bros. Melee tournament and the nature of an anime club) but I would think it would be great if we can share something with the school.
I was talking with Mike a while ago and I was thinking of perhaps a simple way of making an anime event: show an anime movie that has great appeal.
Of course we'll have to wrestle with the politics with going through with the thing, and of course we should show legal DVDs of the movies, but I think a movie would work best at capturing what this group is about while being fairly simple at the same time.
Certain movies that I think could be good are: Various Miyazaki films Various Makoto Shinkai films (i.e. 5 cm per second, The Place Promised in Our Early Days, etc.) Various Masamune Shirow - related fims (Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence, Patlabor) The new Appleseed films Rebuild of Evangelion (when it gets released) End of Evangelion (maybe?) The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (I'm a sap, OK?!) Etc.
What do you guys think of this?

I think a movie night/marathon would definitely be a cool idea. (And on that note, I think we should show both Death Note movies since they'll be released on DVD later this year.)
Also, there's Youmacon to take into a consideration, as well as if any oter anime fims will be going to theaters...

The problem with legaly showing any movie put out by disney or any actual movie company (like Cowboy Bebop) is that we will have to pay the standard $300 fee for 1 showing.
I brought this up at the last Anime club meeting to Gabe.
Going through any anime company is very easy. A lot of times all you have to do is tell them the time, place, date, and show you want to show and it'll be ok'd. Heck, sometimes they'll even send the disks for free!
We would also need to think about size. If we have a big night like this we will need to advertise the hell out of it. Then we need to have a viewing room setup that could hold a good number of people. Is there any theater style rooms we could get a hold of for this purpose?
~~~~~~~~~~
Another idea along the lines of big events. The club I used to be in charge of used to hold parties on campus. We would advertise the hell out of the party and every aspect of it we thought would be entertaining and a draw in. Our members were let in for free, but non-members had to pay a small cover of $3. The club would buy pizza and drinks and candy for all (little ceasers and Sams club brand for cost effectiveness) and we would have a fun time.
We would get a projector and have a movie or OVA showing of some kind on one side of the room for part of the party and have Video Games on the other side. We would hold tournaments. We had Halo, Soul Calibur 2, and DDR. We would also have game shows once the showing was finished. Things like Anime Name that Tune and Try Guessing all the anime in this AMVs. We even held a raffle to garner some extra cash if we had extra items to give away.
We would give prizes to the winners. DVDs and CDs and stuff given to us by companies for that purpose.
It's an idea, not sure how feasible that is with our club's funds an such. But it always drew a nice crowd when we did it (once a month.)
^ That's a good point, but like you said, I don't think we have to be too worried about it. After all, it's just going to be a bunch of college kids showing legitimately-purchased DVDs on a projector screen for free; I doubt they'll have much of a problem with that.
IMO, I think it would be best if we held something like this right before the Christmas break, or some other holiday break. Depending on our schedules for this semester, we should also try to hold it on a day of the week where... A) We're bound to get big crowds for the event. B) At least one or two of our members have very few classes so that they can keep an eye on things and manage the many movies we'll be showing.
Also, should we go sub or dub when showing said movies? On the one hand, there are a lot of good anime movie dubs like Death Note, End of Evangelion, and the Miyazaki movies, but on the other hand, our club is usually based around subtitled media...
NEVER show subs to a large crowd of people who aren't expected to be anime fans. It's bad, people will walk out.
VERY good point. Dubbed it is, then. That said, what would we show that doesn't suck dub-wise?
I can't say that I've seen many Shinkai or Shirow films, nor have I seen the Appleseed movies. However, Miyazaki's films are masterfully dubbed thanks to Disney, so they're prime candidates. I'd agree with End of Eva and Bebop, but I think that to really appreciate it, you'd have to already have been watching the series, or else you won't know what's going on, which is part of the reason why I suggested the DN movies since they're sort of a retelling of the series; since they're live action, though they probably don't really count. We don't know how Rebuild or GWLTT will sound in English, but if they're well done and are released by the time we do this, then they might be good picks as well.
Long story short, we need to pick something that sounds good dubbed but doesn't require a knowledge of prior material in order to appreciate. Hmm...this is harder than I thought.
Cowboy Bebop is the best bet. Simply because it is well known. A lot of people know about Cowboy Bebop so it is a good choice in my opinion. You don't really need to have seen Cowboy Bebop to enjoy the film. All you need to know is who Spike, Jet, and Faye are really. Miyazaki films are great, however, some viewers may see them as too childish. The Ghost in the Shell movies are also another good choice. Almost anything that has played on adult swim would be a good choice.
