Madonna teaches it. And I think a few other colleges does, but I don't know for sure.

Would the Ann Arbor faculty be down with UMD students taking Japanese on their campus?

I'm not sure in AA would allow a UMD student to take a class like they were just a normal student. But most times you can take a class at another university as a guest student. However you need to talk with your advisor and probably the admissions people of both UMD and the college you want to take the class at in order to make sure you can do it and the credit will be accepted.

having considered taking japanese, i found all the paper work to be a pain to deal with, and this is coming from a guy who is considering a career in politics.

wouldnt it just be easier to be enrolled at UMD and EMU at same time?

The main problem with being enrolled at multiple colleges at the same time is Financial Aid and credits. If you don't care about having these classes count toward your final credit total it isn't so much a big deal. But then there is still the problem of financial aid.
Generally, colleges tend to prefer that you are only enrolled in 1 at a time and that you then transfer your credits if you want to continue.

I think you can only take the Japanese classes in the center in Japan. I am thinking about taking a Japanese class as a guest student at another university or just studying it independently online or with tapes or books of some sort.

hmm if that's the case Ed you should check out the UMD library near the DVD movie section. they have a big packet with a book, DVD, and CD on Japanese....your comment just reminded me of it, lol.
I was more leaning on taking the class to do something interesting while fulfilling the language requirement.

haha i guess, but as an update they have japanese 101 and 102 at the Northwest campus
i am already enrolled in the class tuition for it would have been 343$? ish or around there
i was able to online register for the school since it has an open door policy, meaning it accepts everyone
last time i checked there was 6 openings
the class schedule is 9-12:55 on fridays only
lucky for me i have my own policy to keep fridays open when i choose my umd classes :]
WCCCD has jpn as well as the other campuses, like central and eastern but id bet they cost a bit more
and eastern and central's definately dont work into my schedule @_@
and as a side note i believe you can still register for the class since registration doesn't end until aug or something of the sorts ( not sure)
