Hello all,
I recently heard of this Salsa week, which is appearently an event for the student organizations to give back to the campus community, and was wondering what anime club has planned?
My suggestion is to show a movie, because it was the showing of Howl's Moving Castle at the beginning of last semester that got me to join this club in the first place.
If necessary, I can organize it, but I believe we have to do something. I keep getting e-mails through the club e-mail address from living individuals interested in this club's activity, and it might be more comfortable for them to find out more about this club at a more public event than our Friday meetings.
Once again, I am willing to organize such an event.

But our Friday showings ARE open to the public. Though I do admit, from what I have seen our fearless leader doesn't usually do much to welcome new members or inform them of what is going on apart from what we're showing. Also, sending these potential people up to our cubicle is a good thing as well. While Gabe may not be around all the time there are usually a few members hanging around up there who would be willing to talk about the club to potential members.
I'm always approachable whenever I'm around.
I know Game club is planning on something for Salsa week, but as far as I know we don't have anything planned. It might be a good idea actually to do something. When is it? Gabe/Mike, either of you want to get on setting up a location and time for a showing?

Considering it's the 13th-16th, it might be too late to get our hands on a movie like we did at the start of the year, and I'd rather we didn't piggyback off the GC/Terry Bogard event. Any ideas?

Well, it need not be for Salsa week, and once again I can organize it.
And while our meetings are open to the public, it can be an intimidating atmosphere for those unfamiliar with the club. It takes someone with real guts to show up out of the blue and join in, and those people are very rare. What I'm proposing is a less stressful way for them to find out more about our club.

I can vouch for the needing of guts! and I'm kinda hard to intimidate.
Also, I'm not sure about others, but Friday evenings isn't an ideal time for me, since I don't have class on Fridays. Or, you know, I have a family dinner with oodles of people coming over, like last week.
empiremaker, what sort of thing were you thinking of? And, how did I miss someone showing Howl's Moving Castle?
Was there ever any discussion as to how that got made into an anime? I wouldn't have thought the book was a crossover classic.

Well, I doubt we can get something as big as Howls again in this time frame. However, there are a number of different shows that we can show that have been out and can be seen. And it doesn't take long to get permission really. Most anime companies here in the states are very quick about things, and as long as you fill out the request form they will approve it, especially for such a small event as a college club showing their stuff.
Those of you who were around last semester when we planned Howls know that I have the contacts and can get these things approved, we just need a series/ova/movie to show and a Date and Time. I cannot fill out any forms for approval by the companies without a place and a time.
I personally think a Lupin night would be a good idea. Lupin movies are fun, enjoyable, and if we show either the fansubbed stuff and/or the Funimation stuff it will be quick and easy to get approvals for it. I have all of the Funi releases and a majority of the non-licensed movies and OVAs as well.

Lupin is always a good pick. I've a fair share of the unlicensed movies as well, plus Cagliostro.

Lupin doesn't sound so bad, I just know nothing about it. Whatever we choose should be an anime that isn't too much for those who are just getting into the anime culture, but I'll leave that in your capable hands.
If Nate can get permission, I can take care of the advertising and arrangements with the school.
And rima, call me Alanna.
The main issue would be when to have the showing, before finals or after. If after we might not get much of a crowd, but there would be less stress. If before we can pitch it as an event to get a break from studying, but the time frame is stricter. In any case we can invite the HFCC anime club and meet some of our fellow enthusiasts.
But we have got to decide relatively quickly.

Handle arrangements with the school? Isn't that the job of the President and Vice-Pres? As far as I know they are the only ones who can submit requests for room space for club activities.

Hmm...I own a DVD of Princess Mononoke, Porko Rosso, and Spirited Away. I also have The Cat Returns but it's lost somewhere in my room. We could show one of them If you guys want to and if we get it approved in time. Since there all pretty well known as Studio Ghibli productions we wouldn't have to worry too much about the crowds interest if we advertise it.
Since less people are on campus (or want to) after finales, The best bet for a turn out is before. we could do as Alanna said and advertise it as a way to take a break from studying. If we want even more people to come we can mix up a bunch of lemonade and pop a couple dozen bags of popcorn. It would get even more of a crowd since free food always brings people out.

Ghibli movies are out if we want permission. We showed one last year and I doubt the prices have changed (in fact, it was more expensive this time around then the last time I got permission for a Ghibli film, which as still cheaper then any tri-star release) and I think if we want to do another major showing again with a well known movie like Ghibli movies again we should wait until the beginning of next semester for that again.
I think we should stick with standard anime companies. At the very least they don't charge for showings. I would love to show The Castle of Cogliostro as it is an awesome movie, but alas it too is a Miyazaki film and was picked up by Disney. If I can find my good copy of Episode 0 (AKA First Contact) I think that too is a really good movie to show from the Lupin end. We can make this a double feature too. So another Lupin movie (there are a TON of em) or another good and perhaps well known show could be done as well.
I agree with the pre-finals idea. And I think that's the general consensus. So I guess now the ball is in our fearless leader (and his leached hound) to get on finding a date.
As for what to show, we can throw some ideas around during this week's meeting. There is some open time in my schedule that can be filled with said discussion or random good AMVs.

Wait, Cagliostro was picked up by Disney? I thought Manga still retained the rights...

Disney did the newest dub of Cogliostro. I own it.
